Seismic vulnerability assessment and fragility curves for a multistorey gallery arch bridge

Abstract The masonry bridges on the Kalka Shimla Mountain Railway line, which have multiple arch galleries in form of Roman aqueducts, are spectacular. line is situated severe seismic zones (Indian Standard 1893:2016). This research assesses vulnerability Bridge No. 541 line. bridge tallest route. In particular, it using finite element (FE) analysis. For this purpose, an FE model for developed ABAQUS FE-based environment. experimental field study conducted ambient vibration test (AVT) and dynamic parameters (frequency mode shapes) evaluated by operational modal analysis (OMA). Further, updated modifying elastic mechanical property stone to match analytical frequency with results AVT OMA. then used perform a pushover nonlinear estimate performance bridge. Furthermore, fragility curves damage state specific seismicity. shows that vulnerable Zone IV seismicity needs some retrofitting locations such as pier–abutment joints.
